Did you know that approximately 75% of Americans over the age of 35 have some form of gum disease? Naturally, gum disease could cause minor problems—such as swollen or bleeding gums—or even tooth loss. Sadly, gum disease can be difficult to identify. In fact, many people aren’t even aware of what gum disease is. In fact, some claim that 60% of individuals don’t know what gum disease is or how it can be treated.
As you may have heard, gum disease is an inflammation of the gums, typically caused by bacteria, plaque, and tartar. Sadly, if gum disease isn’t treated, it can lead to infections in your gums and bloodstream, and can lead to tooth loss.
Fortunately, there are a few ways you can recognize gum disease. For instance, if your gums bleed, are red or swollen, or if you notice consistent bad breath, a bad taste in your mouth, a receding gum line, or even shifting teeth, you may be dealing with gum disease.
Unfortunately, gum disease can be caused by poor oral hygiene, smoking, or poor nutrition. Fortunately, our dentist can examine the health of your teeth, and develop a plan to help you. Luckily, if you brush and floss well, you can stop bacteria from spreading and may be able to reverse gum disease. Similarly, antibiotics may be useful if your gum disease is severe enough.
