What is an Abscessed Tooth?

Posted .

An abscessed tooth is a serious dental problem that needs treatment right away. It typically develops from untreated tooth decay and dental trauma. When these problems open the tooth enamel, bacteria enter the tooth and infect the core, which is also known as the pulp. If it’s still left untreated, the infection could spread to infect the supporting bones of the tooth.

The signs of an abscessed tooth usually include a throbbing or sharp pain in the tooth and gums. It’s usually continuous; however, sometimes the toothache stops, but it doesn’t mean the abscess has disappeared. Other symptoms include a fever, a bitter taste in the mouth, pain when chewing, tooth sensitivity, and bad breath. They could also include swollen neck glands, uneasiness, swelling of the gums, a swollen jaw, and an open and draining sore on the gums.

If you have any of these symptoms, it’s important to call Cory Williams, DDS at 910-763-1072. Make sure to schedule an appointment with Dr. Cory Williams at your earliest convenience. When you come to our office, your dentist might use a few different treatments to help you. The first might be root canal treatment. This can help drain the infection. The second might be tooth extraction. This can help allow drainage through the gum socket. The third might be to make an incision in the tissue and drain the liquid. After the abscess is treated, your dentist will give you antibiotics to help you fight the infection.
